Crown Lengthening
Many times, we must treat broken or decayed teeth where the lesion extends under the gums.
The main problem in these cases is that the restoration should extend far into the gums provoking severe gum inflammation and other consequent problems such as bleeding, localized gingival hyperplasia with minimal bone loss, gingival recession etc., a situation known as “violation of biological width”.
In addition, due to inflow of moisture from the saliva and from the blood of the gums, the sealing materials do not fully bond to the surface of the teeth with the result that either the fillings detach or the teeth re-caries.
The goal of the surgical procedure known as “crown lengthening”, is to situate the borders of these lesions above the gums so they are more easily accessible and manageable giving the possibility to deliver to our patient a long-lasting restoration.
Crown lengthening is a procedure that literally gives the clinician the access they need while remaining simple and painless for the patient.
